What to expect during a weekend in africa

One of my favorite trips abroad so far. Morocco was like nothing I’ve ever experienced in my life. I was only there for three days, and I got to experience and try so many different things. From riding camels, to going ATVing, Morocco has it all. My roommate Emily and I also got to participate in what’s called an “African bath” not your usual American massage… Follow along as I take you through my Moroccan journey!

I also recommend especially for abroad students doing trips like these through a travel company. It can get confusing trying to navigate where you are and plan activities. My roommate and I went through the company Bus2alps. They are such a great company and basically plan out your whole trip, transportation included.

Day 1: Tea Time, Camel Ridding, and Hiking

To start off the day we got to go into a traditional Moroccan household where the owner showed us how to make tea from scratch. Tea is super popular in Morocco, the people that live here have it every day mostly with every meal.

Next, we headed off to the mountains where we had a quick camel ride. This was my favorite part of the day and was the most fun. The camels were actually HUGE! You had to step on a ladder just to get on top of them. Be sure to dress appropriately for this because it's important that your comfortable... especially while riding a camel 😊

Next on the agenda was hiking through the mountains and seeing the beautiful waterfalls. Now, do NOT be fooled, this was way harder than a classic hike. I swear we were mountain climbing. The mountain was massive and honestly it was kind of scary climbing it. But the view at the top was worth the difficult climb.

Day 2: ATVing, Shopping, and Exploring

The second day began bright and early... 8am to be exact. After breakfast, we went right from our hostel to the ATV tour. The ATV tour was super fun and we got to ride all around Morocco, and even took a quick break in between for some tea! At the end BeReal went off at the perfect time, right when we were finishing up our ride

After we finished up our ATV tour we got to explore the town, try some of the food, and shop!

The first little shop we went to was called Bloty . Bloty is an all-natural herbal store where you can buy cosmetics, spices, oils, medicine and much more. I actually got to buy Moroccan oil straight out of Morocco!

I also bought spices to cook with, face moisturizers, lip balm and oil that helps you sleep. I really enjoyed this store because first, all these products are natural and do not contain any harmful chemicals, and secondly because it was very affordable

We spent the next few hours walking around the the Marrakech Museum learning about the history of Morroco

Last Day: Hammam-Spa (african bath)

To end our amazing trip we had what was called an "Hammam-spa and massage". Now, Emily and I were under the impression that this was similar to a normal massage because that is what our tour guide said it was like. However, that was not the case... during the African Bath you are not wearing any clothing. Yes, this was very uncomfortable in the beginning but it is all part of the experience. After a little bit you start to feel more comfortable because it's actually quite relaxing!

A hammam is a public steam room, often offering massage and exfoliation, in which people can come together to relax and bathe. Hammams often contain a series of rooms employing dry and damp heat, showers, soaps, and salts. Once your're inside the bath they scrub you from head to toe then you sit in the sauna and let all the toxins leave your body.

There's not really anything else I can say about it, if your're interested I highly suggest testing it out yourself. It's a life changing experience and something that my roommate and I have as a core memory so far abroad

To end our trip we had a fantastic dinner at a local resturant called Cafe Arabe . It was a beautiful resturant where you sat on cozy cushion, a very fun vibe

A Perfect Weekend

Overall, I would highly recommend making the trip out to Morocco. It was such an amazing learning experience as well as a huge culture shock. I feel like I learned a lot this trip and I would love to come back again
